It’s sweet news for BTS fans!

Kim Seok Jin, also known by his stage name Jin, song ‘Abyss’ finished No.1 of our Hot 50 World Songs poll in April 2021.

That’s a great birthday gift from King’s choice community since Jin released this second solo song just one day short of his 28th birthday! A great proof of Jin’s talent who wrote the lyrics himself with the help of RM (Kim Nam-Joon) for the chorus.
The song is an extremely courageous and audacious step for a Korean artist, tackling a taboo thematic in both Korean society and the music industry: anxiety, stress and burnout. Jin reported that his inspiration came from “when I was feeling down.”

Indeed in ‘Abyss,’ Jin speaks about his insecurities regarding his career and music creation, and how his darker emotions drove him to write and release the song that became the 3rd most-liked song by a Korean artist on YouTube Music with 2.8M likes.

U-know new album ‘Noir’ and its title track ‘Thank U’ has settled No.2 with over 12,5000 votes. U-know (Yunho) is a South Korean singer, actor and a member of the pop duo TVXQ, and has already more than 17 years of singing experience under his belt.

‘Thank U’ is a pop dance song with a sense of darkness and heaviness that can be found in a film noir flick with a catchy and witty chorus.

The cinematic music video stars famous actors Hwang Jung Min and Lee Jung Hyun with a direction that draws heavily from various noir films of both Asian and Occidental influences. The 7 minutes-long music video stands as a deeper representation of the struggles that Yunho has faced in his 17 year-career.

‘The Rose’ song ‘Black Rose’ is No.3 !

‘The Rose’ is composed of four members: Sammy, Leo, Dylan, Jeff. Claiming that various agreements and clauses in their contract were broken, the band ended their relationship with their previous agency while suing for reparations. In retaliation, the agency took their latest album off all the music streaming services. This song was released in August 2020, after their album was taken offline. ‘Black Rose’ is named after and dedicated to their fans. ‘Black Rose’ seems to be a message to their fans not to worry and they will be back soon.
Being ranked as third best song just proves that fans have a message back, we are waiting for you!

How Can BTS Become So Successful and The World’s Biggest BoyBand?

BTS’ve been number one on iTunes in over 65 countries, have got almost 12 million subscribers on YouTube and are the first K-pop band EVER to top the US album charts.

It’s fair to say, BTS is the K-pop band that is taking over the world.

They are currently on their Love Yourself world tour, which saw the group come to the UK for the very first time this week.

Who are BTS?
BTS are a K-pop (or Korean pop) group made up of seven members – Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook – who come from all over South Korea.

They launched in 2013 and have since rocketed to global stardom.

Over the years, the group have produced material around various themes starting with the ‘School’ trilogy.

This was followed by the ‘Most Beautiful Moment in Life’, ‘Wings’, and most recently, the ‘Love Yourself’ series.

Their latest album ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ stormed to the top of the US charts, which saw South Korean President Moon Jae-in taking to Twitter to congratulate the boys on their success.

BTS is the biggest K-pop group internationally – and it doesn’t look like they’re stopping any time soon.

What is K-pop?
K-pop was first born in South Korea in the 1990s as a mix between Western and Asian music.

It brings together elements of R&B, pop, hip-hop and rap – both in the music and in the way artists are styled.

It is known for its super slick production, edgy and totally amazing music videos.

The eye-catching fashion and super synchronised dance routines are very impressive too.

Scooter Braun, who manages Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, explains: “These larger than life visuals allow fans who may not understand the language to still understand the music.”

In order to become a successful genre, K-pop needed to go international.

It finally got its breakthrough in 2002, when a young female artist called BoA became number one not only in Korea, but also in Japan.

This helped K-pop to spread across Asia and, eventually, the rest of the world.

Now, the K-pop industry is worth millions of pounds, with bands winning fans all over the world.

There is even a government department for K-pop in South Korea, which gives the musical genre official support because of how culturally and economically beneficial it is to the country.

Since Gangnam Style by Psy broke the internet back in 2012, the genre saw its popularity grow even more. But no band or artist has come even close to the global popularity of BTS.

Why are BTS so successful?
There are four reasons that BTS have become as popular as they have.

  1. The music

With K-pop growing in popularity, they’re simply making the music that people want to listen to!

According to Billboard, their album ‘Love Yourself: Tear’, which is sung in Korean, became “the first primarily foreign-language No 1 album in over 12 years.”

Not only that, but many people say that the subject of their music has played a part in their success.

While many K-pop songs are about relationships and love, BTS cover subjects that other bands may not like bullying, elitism and mental health.

  1. Their performance

There’s no point having amazing songs if you can’t sell them to the world – and BTS have got this down to a fine art.

With their slick dance routines and extremely impressive music videos, they’ve attracted a loyal group of fans who have fallen in love with their music even more.

Mr Son, the band’s choreographer, explains: “Music videos seem to be one of the most important factors. Messages from an artist can be delivered more effectively.”

To polish their performances, BTS practice for hours. For their debut performance, they were working at it for 12 to 15 hours a day to get it right. Well, it certainly paid off!

  1. The internet

The internet – and in particular social media – has played an enormous part in the success of the group.

Suga told BBC Radio 1: “I think we’re so lucky to be born at the right time. Without social media, we wouldn’t have been so successful.”

In 2018, the boys won a Billboard Music Award for Top Social Artist, beating huge names like Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez.

They were the first K-Pop group to win one.

“We still cannot believe that we are standing here on this stage at the Billboard Music Awards,” the group said in their acceptance speech.

Social media has also allowed the group to connect with their followers on a really personal level and gather fans across the world, including here in the UK.

Not only that, but they also engage with their fans via the internet in a different way to other groups like them.

Unlike many other bands, pop culture expert Kim Hern-sik says BTS are actually managed by quite a small agency and are allowed to do what they want a bit more.

“The boys are granted freedom in interacting with their fans on social media,” she says. “They are really successful because they know how to interact with their fans and I think their popularity is here to stay.”

  1. The fans

No band can have success without its fans and BTS has some of the most loyal, dedicated fans that the world has EVER seen with 16.5 million followers on Twitter and 13.5 million on Instagram.

Known as the ARMY, it was the fans who cast an unbelievable 300 million online votes to ensure that the group won their Billboard award.

And in Autumn 2017, they watched the video for ‘DNA’ 50 million times on YouTube in just one month!

With numerous pages, profiles and sites set up all over the world by adoring followers, fans spend hours posting content, sending messages and sharing their love for the seven boys.

Three Awesome Facts About BTS

  1. The boys all live together and apparently Jin does all the cooking.
  2. The band’s own choreographer Mr Son says that J-Hope is the best dancer.
  3. What do they like to do to relax? The answer = SLEEP!

PRODUCE X 101: Yoon Seobin JYP Rumors Confirmed!

Yoon Seobin, a JYP Entertainment trainee gaining spotlight on Mnet‘s TV show PRODUCE X 101 as the current #1 spot winner, is now facing rumors that he was an infamous school bully in his earlier days. As soon as the first episode of the program aired on May 3, 2019, an anonymous writer posted online what he/she knows about Yoon Seobin’s history.

This anonymous writer claimed he/she knew Yoon Seobin since as early as his elementary and middle school days. The writer shared yearbook pictures of a “Yoon Byung Hwi” and claimed that it was Yoon Seobin’s real name prior to changing it.

As soon as this post went viral on social media platforms, other alleged pictures of Yoon Seobin’s past began to surface. These pictures captured a male student in school uniform engaging in underage smoking and drinking.

The post, now deleted, pointed out that Yoon Seobin was a “일진 (il-jin, delinquent / bully)”, and voiced a tremendous amount of concern. The post claimed, “I’m writing this because… I wouldn’t want someone like him to succeed, become self-absorbed, then turn into someone like Seungri.”

Translations: “I feel like you will only believe me with pictures, so here are his elementary and middle school yearbook photos. He changed his name to Yoon Seobin, but his name used to be Yoon Byung Hwi. I’m sharing this because Yoon Byung Hwi was an infamous ‘iljin’ in the City of Gwangju. Everyone who is my age probably knows about him. He was a known bully since his middle school days. It was a part of his daily life to pick on other students. A lot of students I know were bullied by him. I’ve seen it happen all the time. He deleted his Facebook account and ghosted everyone for years… before showing up on TV like this. I wouldn’t want someone like him to succeed, become self-absorbed, then turn into someone like Seungri. So that’s why I’m writing this. If this isn’t true, I’m ready to be sued. Sorry if I make no sense.”

Since the rumor, the PRODUCE X 101 fan page shared a statement formally requesting Yoon Seobin’s withdrawal from the program. The statement explains, “Yoon Seobin would not be fit to be a part of the program that is ‘of the national producers, by the national producers, for the national producers’ to discover potential global K-Pop stars.”

Translations: “[Official Request to Remove] The ‘PRODUCE X 101 Gallery’, a community for Mnet’s audition program PRODUCE X 101, is releasing this official request to remove trainee Yoon Seobin from the show, after hearing the disappointing news of his history of being a bully. On May 5, Yoon Seobin’s yearbook pictures went viral on online communities. An anonymous writer shared allegations of Yoon Seobin having been a delinquent in his neighborhood and bullied his fellow classmates. Other pictures of him cursing on Facebook and smoking in his school uniform were shared. This shows that Yoon Seobin would not be fit to be a part of the program that is ‘of the national producers, by the national producers, for the national producers’ to discover potential global K-Pop stars. It could have been a simple “stupid mistake” by a teenager growing up. But if there are victims of his actions, they are forever traumatized because of him. Therefore, we of PRODUCE X 101 Gallery request of PRODUCE X 101’s creators to immediately remove Yoon Seobin from the program.”

JYP are currently checking the authenticity of the rumors about Yoon Seobin’s past. MNET has personally reached out JYP and the staff team of PDX101 is checking about the issue as well. Once Mnet will have a report from JYP they will publish it!

Male trainee Yoon Seo Bin of Mnet’s idol survival seires ‘Produce X 101’ has officially been removed from the program, JYP Entertainment announced on May 8. Meanwhile, Yoon Seo Bin’s latest rank based on netizen votes after last week’s airing of ‘Produce X 101’ was #12.
